This video shows the power and effectiveness of a basic front kick…

Kathy Long is a mixed martial arts fighter and five time world kick boxing champion. In this video, she demonstrates how to respond if someone grabs your arm from behind.

It shows great use of the palm heel strike (the easiest and safest strike for beginners to learn) and illustrates how responding deliberately within the first moments of an attack can help save your life.

Check out more basic self-defense techniques here.

To look at me, you wouldn’t think I’d be a formidable adversary in some kind of hand-to-hand confrontation. A whopping 5’5” weighing in at about 130 pounds (give or take a few—depending on how many Krispy Kremes I happen to devour recently), I don’t seem like much of a threat.

But years ago, my husband and I began training in Krav Maga. He wanted to help me increase my ability to protect myself, and I thought it would be a great way to help eliminate some of the results of my frequent ‘doughnut overindulgence.’ And maybe I’m just getting old, but society—in general—seems to (me) more violent and less respectful than ever. So I considered that learning a few basic rules of self-defense couldn’t hurt, right?

Originally, I found it extremely awkward performing the straight punch and front kicks… but only at first. Like any sport or hobby—for instance, learning to play a musical instrument or how to hit a softball—making sure I was standing correctly and making the proper motion just took a few practices before it became more comfortable. And, once it did, our little daily session got more exciting and much more fun.

Indeed, I realized that practicing Krav Maga with my husband was a great way for us to spend more time together. We were both learning an activity that neither of us had previously experienced, and so this was a new element of enjoyment in our relationship.

However, the reasons for knowing how to defend myself never really influenced me deeply until our daughter was born. Here was this sweet, innocent child who depended on me for everything! I strongly felt that I needed to know how to guard and protect her. Parents understand that intensity… but it’s impossible to describe.

This is one of the reasons that I love Survival Pack. It gives an added layer of defense to the awareness I already practice in the form of a bodyguard type app. Something that I learned early on is that predators (people who look to hurt, steal, or otherwise want to turn innocent bystanders into victims) search for distracted, solitary individuals. But, self-defense training gives you a confidence that you telegraph without even knowing it, and the Survival Pack app boosts that confidence.

So what are my reasons for learning self-defense? My family. Not only do I want to be able to defend myself, but I want to teach my daughter the same. The physical benefits are just a welcome, secondary bonus.
